Travel Woes and Tabloid News

Seeing as I was supposed to have the day off today, I feel justified taking a moment to toss up another blog post.

We were supposed to be hanging out with my mom and stepdad, Denis today...but they are stranded! With all the airport trouble here, they've had to spend one night in Houston and will have a total of THREE nights in Newark trying to get a flight to London. The latest word is that they will fly overnight to Frankfurt on Wednesday and arrive in London (fingers crossed) on Thursday. Please send your good travel vibes their way! Very frustrating to say the least and we can't wait to see them.

SO, to fend off the travel blues, I decided it was time to comment briefly on British newspapers - topic of much interest here. The UK is small enough, that the leading newspapers are not city-specific, but national (much like USA today, the WSJ and the tabloids). They have no qualms about having a political slant or a tabloid style. Therefore, when you see someone with a particular newspaper, you can make all sorts of snap judgements (conservative, liberal, middle class, working class, dumb-ass, etc.). If you care to study up, it's explained quite nicely here

The Daily Mail targets what you might call the "middle America" of Britain. It's considered perfectly legitimate, but screams tabloid to me. Maybe sensationalist is a better descriptor. The paper seems to always be proclaiming that such and such will give you cancer. In fact, at the bottom of this post, is a list of 131 things that give you cancer, according to the Daily Mail. Pretty funny.

And the inspiration behind this blog post was a great video that my buddy, Mike Wicks directed me to. Well worth the watch. Happy Holidays, everyone.

That sucks about the travel. Hopefully they had some time to kick around NYC a bit - the weather's been great!
