The Bucholzes go to Malaysia

Today we arrived in Malaysia, our home for the next two years. After so much preparation and stress related to the move, it almost seemed anticlimactic as we landed and taxied to our gate at Kuala Lumpur International airport. But despite our experiences in other countries, the warmth and humidity that enveloped us as we stepped from the airport were strong reminders that this was different. As we made our way from the airport onto the highway, I was struck by how lush the countryside was. Despite being literally carved out of the jungle, I was also reminded strongly of the UK; we drove on the left side of the road and the traffic signage is identical. It's been out of power since 1957, but Britain has certainly left its mark.

After checking in to our temporary residence, a two bedroom "executive stay" apartment, we walked to a shopping center down the road for a bite to eat. We dined on excellent curries served on broad banana leaves and washed it down with fresh fruit juices. Though we dined big and even had a couple dishes just to try, the bill came to about $10 for the 3 of us. Things seem to be a great value - except alcohol, which is legal, but taxed to high hell.

After a quick dip in the pool, we were chased inside by the bugs feasting on Anya. We'll remember our repellent next time. We're tired and jet lagged, but excited about what's in store. So far so good.
