County Kerry Weekend

We had Monday off this week, so Anya and I headed to County Kerry Ireland for a weekend getaway. About an hour of flying saw us into Co. Kerry airport, which is little more than a landing strip in a sheep pasture. This is a good thing. Fifteen minutes after touchdown we were in our rental car and cruising the ring of Kerry road. The road moves from village to village and skirts the cliffs along the Iveragh peninsula. We stopped for a beautiful hike, the sun was shining, life was good.

Sunday was spent exploring the Dingle peninsula, were Gaelic is spoken as the first language in most places. To my ears, it sounded as if the speech were a tape played backwards...almost English, but totally unintelligible.

Irish snack on Inch beach

We navigated hair-pin cliff-side roads and found majestic bays and new shades of green around every corner. That night, we had a little Irish meal beach-side at Inch, where I was to surf the next day.

Fortunately for us, two dolphins chose that time to play in the water, flipping and tail dancing in the calm water. A local surfer assured me that Hurricane Earl (off the coast of Florida) had pushed waves our way and swell would arrive in the morning.

Sure enough, the next day the waves were hitting and the sun was shining. Out in the water, I had one of those moments in life that are difficult describe; I guess I'd call it spiritual.

I was sitting out in the water during a flat spell, amazing scenery all around, when i saw a dolphin jump clear out of the water about 100 ft from me. At the same time, a wave was forming. I took the wave and stood up in clean steep water (as opposed to the white water after the wave falls) and was surfing along the wave...just like the cool kids. I look up to see that the dolphin is surfing the same wave in front of me, jumping out of the water and back into the wave - we rode that wave together for probably 15 seconds. It was unbelievable.

Please pardon the cheesy description, but the effect is still upon me. Even as I type this, I can't help but grin.

Sadly lacking a decent lens, but there I am
